Shenzhen, a city born 26 years ago in South China, is striving to realize a dream —hosting a grand sports event for young people worldwide.
China's first special economic zone established Aug. 26, 1980 and the youngest city in China, or maybe all over the world, Shenzhen has grown from a fishing town into a vigorous modern metropolis.
The American Time magazine pub-lished an article titled "The birth and rebirth of Shenzhen" in its issue dated Aug. 21. Shenzhen was men-tioned in the article as "an economic miracle," "cradle of China's industrial revolution," and has achieved "a re-markable success. " Now Shenzhen's developement strategy is being shift from targeting a "speedy Shenzhen" to an "efficient Shenzhen," the article praised. At the forefront of China's reforms for 25 years, "it would not be the first time Shenzhen has led the way." It concluded that such transition "will provide the answer for China, once again," and Shen-zhen's new strategy may have "globe-rattling implications."
Shenzhen topped mainland cities with a per capita GDP of US$7,000 in 2005; the city also ranked top in per capita income and total foreign export volume last year. The per capita using space is 22 sqm.
An affluent city with strong eco-nomic growth, Shenzhen is also a town with scenic beauty. Up to 45 percent of its urban districts are co-vered by greenery, with per capita greenery reaching 16 sqm.
Shenzhen has been named an international "Gar-den City," "Global Top 500 by UNEP," "State Horticulture City," "China's Model City in Greening." It is also a popular tourist destination with many innovative theme parks.
Shenzhen is a city of young people, with residents aged 26 on average, the same as the city's history. There are more than 60 universities, three univer-sity towns and 800,000 students within one hour's drive from the city.
Shenzhen has a dream —backed by city government, growing out of the hearts of young university students and sports fan residents —to hold this event where young athletes from every corner of the world come and compete for glory. Shenzhen is looking forward to the Universiade!(黎丹编译)
